Male Pattern Baldness – Causes and Treatment

Male Pattern Baldness – Causes and Treatment

We at Cher-Mere, continue our focus on hair and hair care, with a look at male pattern baldness, or androgenic alopecia - the most common type of hair loss in men.  More than 50 percent of men over the age of 50 will be affected by male pattern baldness.

A family history of baldness is a major cause of this condition.  Male pattern baldness is associated with male sex hormones called androgens, which have many functions, including regulating hair growth.  Inherited male pattern baldness usually has no side effects.

Each hair on the head has a growth cycle. In men, this cycle begins to weaken and the hair follicle shrinks, making hair strands shorter and finer.  Eventually, the growth cycle ends, with no new hair growth.

Male pattern baldness can begin in the teenage years, but it occurs more often in adult men and increases with age.  If your hair loss begins at the temples or the crown of the head, you may have male pattern baldness.  Some men will get a single bald spot, while others experience receding hairlines.

Despite this, you can achieve the appearance of a fuller head of hair through:

  • A haircut - The right haircut or hairstyle can make thinning hair look fuller.
  • Wigs - They can cover thinning hair, receding hairlines and complete baldness. For a natural look, choose wig colors, styles and textures that look similar to your original hair.
  • Hair weaves - Wigs that are sewn into your natural hair.
  • hair transplant - This is the most invasive and expensive treatment for hair loss. Hair transplants remove hair from areas of the scalp that have active hair growth and transplant them to thinning or balding areas. Multiple treatments are often necessary, so consult your hair care professional, before embarking on this treatment.

Be sure to complement these treatments with Cher-Mere’s Hair Organics Thinning Hair line of Deep Conditioner, Hair Moisturizer and Nourishing Hair Oil, all enriched with organic jojoba, Shea butter and olive oil, to help stimulate hair growth.

Going bald can be life-changing, and you should seek counseling if you are anxious, depressed or experiencing low self-esteem.   While there’s no way to prevent male pattern baldness, reducing stress can significantly decrease the risk.
