Testicular Cancer – Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

As Cher-Mere continues to focus on cancer awareness in men for November, we take a look at testicular cancer, which can affect men at any age.

According to the Mayo Clinic in the US, testicular cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the testicles located in the scrotum. The testicles produce sperm and the hormone testosterone.

Testicular cancer is not as common as other types, but can still affect the average man.

The first sign of testicular cancer is a bump or lump on a testicle, which can spread to other parts of the body. However, the good news is that it is highly treatable, even after it spreads.

Common treatments include surgery and chemotherapy.

Signs and symptoms of testicular cancer include:

A lump or swelling in either testicle

A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum

A dull ache in the lower belly or groin

Sudden swelling in the scrotum

Pain or discomfort in a testicle or the scrotum

Enlargement or tenderness of the breast tissue

Back pain

It's not clear what causes testicular cancer, but it starts when something causes changes to the DNA of testicle cells.   This DNA gives instructions that tell the cell what to do.

The changes tell the cells to grow and multiply quickly, leading to a mass called a tumor.

In time, the tumor can grow beyond the testicle. Testicular cancer most often spreads to the lymph nodes, liver and lungs and is called metastatic testicular cancer.

Factors that may increase your risk of testicular cancer include:

Having a family history of testicular cancer and being a young adult, as it’s most common in teens and young men between 15 and 45 years of age.

There's no way to prevent testicular cancer. However, health care providers recommend regular testicle self-exams to check for lumps, pain and swelling in the testicles or groin area.

Visit your doctor or health care provider if symptoms last longer than two weeks.
